Here are the first two petitions that appeared today on President Trump’s White House website:

1. The first calls for Trump to disclose his full tax returns, with information that can verify that he is complying with the Constitution’s “emoluments clause,” which bars government officials from accepting gifts from foreign leaders. The petition states: “The unprecedented economic conflicts of this administration need to be visible to the American people, including any pertinent documentation which can reveal the foreign influences and financial interests which may put Donald Trump in conflict with the emoluments clause of the Constitution,” the petition states.

As of this afternoon, the petition had more than 3,000 signatures.

2. The second petition, urging Trump to divest from his businesses or put his assets in a blind trust, had about 140 signatures as of Friday afternoon. It states that Trump should take these actions “in keeping with tradition and to avoid the appearance of conflicts of interest, corruption, and violations of the emoluments clause of the US Constitution.”

I urge you to sign both (see below) — not because Trump will do either, but because the more people who sign the more likely it is that the petitions become news; and the more newsworthy they are, the more likely it is that members of Congress (Republican as well as Democrat) may feel justified in pushing these issues.

What do you think?
